Grey Gulls is sited on the tip of the rocky peninsula of Marblehead, a coastal town above Boston valued for centuries for its deep sheltered harbor. Winter winds are a challenge here.

Curved flower beds, backed by clipped yew, echo the curves of the old sea wall and the shore beyond. In winter, the embracing yew hedges get the protection of picturesque wattle fencing. Except for the weeping Camperdown elm and the yew, no woody plants are used in this garden because of the wind. Instead bold, tall perennials like Scotch thistle, artichokes, aconites, and thalictrums are favored.
